Clarke's intertwined initials imprinted at top edge.<br>Actor<br>John Sleeper Clarke (1833-1899)<br>made his professional stage debut in Boston (1851), followed by frequent performances in Philadelphia and especially New York.<br>Initially a tragedian, Clarke had his greatest stage successes in comic roles.<br>A friend and schoolmate of fellow actor Edwin Booth, Clarke<br>married Asia Booth, the elder sister of Edwin and of John Wilkes Booth<br>. After Lincoln's assassination, Clarke was briefly imprisoned for giving his wife's letters from John Wilkes Booth to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Clarke<br>moved to England in 1867<br>and, finding stage success in London, lived out his life there. Toned. Mounting residue on verso. Corners lightly worn.
