In May of 1886, a pharmacist mixed a fragrant syrup with soda and introduced Coca-Cola to the world at a soda fountain in Atlanta, Georgia. America's favorite soft drink was born.
As its popularity grew, Coca-Cola was featured at more and more soda fountains. Starting as an alternative to the saloon after the Civil War, the soda fountain at first served only soda and mineral waters. By the turn of the century it had become a popular, often elaborate, beverage center throughout the U.S. with every cold drink imaginable.
Soda Fountain Sweetheart Barbie brings this moment to life. She is the first in a series of Barbie dolls dressed in beautiful fashions inspired by the exquisite ensembles featured in Coca-Cola advertising. Through her we see not only America's past, but how we looked in the very latest styles of the day. The fashions, worn by the loveliest women of the time, appeared in ads illustrated by famous artists. As the time changes, the fashion changed. And because most were illustrated in glorious detail, one can almost tell the year of the ad by the fashion.
